What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness.

It's caused by fluid build-up and increased pressure within the eye that damages the optic nerve that progressively worsens your vision. This disease can cause severe, irreversible vision loss if left untreated.

In many cases, appropriate control and treatment can help prevent further damage to the eyes and protect your vision. Epic EyeCare offers several treatments to help address glaucoma. Learn more about the treatments we provide and contact us to schedule an appointment.

The 2 Main Types of Glaucoma

  • Open-angle glaucoma: the most common type. It is a lifelong condition that accounts for at least 90% of all glaucoma cases.
  • Angle-closure glaucoma: a rare form of the disease which requires immediate medical attention. It occurs when the angle is closed in many or most areas between the iris and cornea, which reduces fluid drainage and increases eye pressure.

Preserve Your Vision For Longer

Glaucoma: The Sneaky Thief of Sight

There is a reason glaucoma is called “the sneaky thief of sight”--half the people with glaucoma don’t even know they have it! Meaning, they may not have symptoms in the early stages.

At Epic EyeCare, we diagnose and help preserve your vision with cutting-edge glaucoma treatments that can slow the progression of the disease.

What are the Signs of Glaucoma?

glaucoma signs

As mentioned earlier, glaucoma usually shows no symptoms in its early stages. When signs do manifest, it's usually loss of tunnel vision or peripheral vision. Unfortunately, by the time vision loss has occurred, it cannot be reversed.

That said, the less common angle-closure glaucoma does show a sudden onset of symptoms, including:

  • Extreme eye pain
  • Eye redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea

If you experience any of these symptoms, seek prompt diagnosis and treatment by contacting Epic EyeCare in Garland or visiting your nearest emergency room.

Who's at Risk for Glaucoma?

  • Age 40 +

The prevalence of glaucoma increases with age, with most glaucoma patients aged 40 and up. That said, there is a much rarer form of this disease (congenital glaucoma) that affects infants.

  • Family History & Ethnicity

Your risk for developing glaucoma is higher if you have a family history of the disease. Those of African American, Hispanic, Asian and Native American, and Indigenous Canadian descent have a higher risk of developing this disease.

  • Other Conditions

High myopia, hypertension and diabetes can increase the risk of developing glaucoma.

  • Eye Injury or Trauma

An eye injury, trauma or eye surgery can increase the likelihood of developing glaucoma.

Common Glaucoma Treatments

There is currently no cure for glaucoma. However, several treatments are available to prevent the progression of this sight-robbing condition. With the right care, you have a higher chance of managing your glaucoma and preserving your vision.

Common treatments include:

Eye Drops

Your optometrist will prescribe eye drops to help regulate pressure inside the eye by decreasing fluid production and/or improving drainage.

Laser Surgery

If eye drops aren’t doing enough to reduce intraocular pressure or intraocular temperature in open-angle glaucoma, laser surgery may be an option. Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) opens up the drainage system in the eye to reduce pressure.

SLT is successful in 80% of cases and can reduce eye pressure by 20%.

Other Surgeries

If a laser procedure or eye drops do not lower eye pressure to the desired level, your eye doctor may recommend one of the following surgeries:

  • Incision Surgery
  • Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
  • Glaucoma Drainage Implants

Dr. Hoang is great! Very personable and provided a variety of suggestions for contact lenses for us ... to choose from. Had both siblings fitted here for eye glasses and while the glasses are expensive, the eye exams were quick and accurate!

I have been seeing Dr. Tran for about 8 years now, maybe longer? Even though I have moved further an... d further away during that time (I am now over an hour away), I continue to come here because everyone is so nice and welcoming. The receptionists are always super respectful and helpful. Everyone else is incredibly patient with me, especially when I have to walk around the office with no contacts and have to feel my way around because I am BLIND. Dr. Tran’s exams are little fast paced but I don’t mind. He’s pretty laid back but still very professional. I like being able to crack too jokes without feeling weird/ awkward and I feel safe enough to do that here. I’ve never had any communication issues and everything is always explained to me so there aren’t any surprises. I really appreciate that and will continue to come here as long as it’s open.

Friendly and accommodating staff! Dr. Tran is thorough and knowledgeable. I trust his expertise and ... always get great results year after year. One time, I ran out of contacts before I was able to order my new prescription. In the meantime, I had a huge presentation to give at work. Being that I’m not as confident wearing my glasses, Dr. Tran and his team made sure I had a pair of contacts for the day of. They really care about their patients. You can also tell that his employees are happy to be there. That says a lot about how Dr. Tran is running his practice and taking care of his employees. Look no further! You are in good hands at Epic Eye Care!

I found Dr. Tran's office as I was driving down Beltline Rd in Garland one afternoon. The sign ''Epi... c Eye Care'' caught my attention, and since I had previously been to see another eye specialist not far from his office; and because I was not happy with the final results,. I made an appointment with Dr. Tran. I had also referred a friend of mine to visit the previous eye doctor, and I went with my friend on two or three occasions to have her eyes checked. When we left for the final time, I was not pleased with the examines and the charges. It was obvious the doctor was strictly interested in how much money she could make from my friend. She ran numerous test and each one was very expensive; needless to say, she could not come up with a diagnosis. That was my main reason for making an appointment with Dr. Tran. Since the first time I visited his office... I and my friend and several others whom I have recommended see Dr. Tran for any eye problems have done so for several years now. Dr. Tran is a very unique person and an exceptional human being and Eye Doctor. He has diagnosed and treated my eye problems and many of my friends' ever since I first met him. He has also referred me to a couple of other eye specialist for special treatments which were required.. Dr. Tran is truly one of a kind! And he is very knowledgeable and precise in his profession. I am 73 years old and have seen more than a few medical doctors, dentists, and eye doctors during my life time. Dr. Tran is the exception, and he has been a true blessing to me! I have the utmost appreciation and respect for this man!. If you are in need of a wonderful eye doctor, go see my friend, Dr. Pui Tran. You will see first hand exactly what I have been talking about... Jim Martin - Garland, Texas.

The staff and Dr. Tran are wonderful. I absolutely recommend this clinic for younger children that h... ave a difficult time doing the eye exam at school.
- Jan. 08, 2021
Totally, unexpectedly and rewarding 1st appointment. I have a specially difficult issue with one eye... . From Gabi, the medical assistant, to the doctor himself, they were professional, right to the point, explained his advise and started my new contact lens fittings trial. The unexpected part is that my insurance should cover the expense including the lens which would have cost me over $500 per year. Hopefully if the daily wear contacts work out, my eyes will be healthier, have better vision and comfort. I highly recommend Dr. Tran.

Glaucoma Testing Treatment FAQs

How does an eye doctor diagnose glaucoma?

Since glaucoma has no side effects early on, it is essential for people with a family history of risk factors for glaucoma to get tested. The following tests diagnose glaucoma:

  • Tonometry: measures the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure or IOP)
  • Ophthalmoscopy (dilated eye exam): examines the shape and color of the optic nerve
  • Perimetry: measures your field of vision
  • Gonioscopy: checks the angle where the iris meets the cornea
  • Pachymetry: determines the thickness of the cornea to better evaluate eye pressure.
What foods should you avoid if you have glaucoma?

The following are the foods every glaucoma patient should consider avoiding immediately. It should help keep your optic nerve healthy and minimize eye pressure.

  • Caffeine - certain studies show that caffeine contributes to increased intraocular pressure.
  • Saturated fats - a diet high in saturated fats can lead to weight gain, which not only increases intraocular pressure but also cholesterol levels.
  • Trans fats - try to limit your consumption of trans fats because they can also raise cholesterol levels
  • Salt - make sure to consume salt sparingly, as increased blood pressure can indirectly lead to intraocular pressure.
What percentage of glaucoma patients go blind?

About 60% of patients diagnosed with glaucoma will eventually lose some vision.

However, the rate of legal blindness among glaucoma patients is 5%. Getting effective treatment early on will greatly increase your ability to preserve and maximize your vision.
